My newest project Free School is about a democratic school in upstate, New York. In a Democratic or self-directed school students share in the decision making with the staff. Most have no classes, grades or tests. The Zena Democratic school in Kingston, New York is a self-directed school of about 75 students and staff. I spent a rewarding nine months (a full school year) filming at the school. There were so many interesting moments and fascinating people at the school it was difficult to cull the footage down to an hour or so. I think the resulting film is funny, enlightening and heartfelt and I hope you think so, too.
Students and staff at a self-directed school find that democracy is messy as they balance personal freedom against the needs of the school community.
